Police on pedal patrol
COPS have taken their feet off their panda car pedals and reduced their carbon footprints by patrolling the streets on pushbike.
Officers from the Wakefield Central neighbourhood police team (NPT) are now carrying out daily city centre patrols on two wheels, leaving their cars back at the station.
Insp Dave Peach says his team are playing their part in making the city a more environmentally friendlier place to work and live.
He said: "The eco-benefits are clear to see and allow officers to reduce their carbon footprint while being kinder to the environment."
The initiative also offers improvements in the fight against crime as well as the battle to protect the planet.
Insp Peach said: "By being on bikes it allows officers to provide a speedier response and gives high visibility policing.
"It allows the officers to engage with the community and be their eyes and ears and it will also assist them to reach areas that are more difficult to get to in a vehicle.
"Officers will now be able to increase their patrol areas visiting footpaths, open spaces and ginnels where we do have groups of youths gathering."
GTP cycles, on Westgate End, donated a bicycle to the NPT.
Owner of the store Mark Burgess said: "During the past six months there has been an increase in people using bikes. This is down partly to rising fuel prices, car parking charges, and people caring about the environment as they leave no emissions.
"It is good to see local police officers out and about on bikes and shows they are concerned about the environment."
