Recycling scheme is spreading

A NEW recycling scheme is being launched across Normanton, Altofts and Sharlston.

Each household will receive recycling boxes, bins and information packs during the next few weeks from Wakefield Council.

The council will then collect all materials for recycling.

Coun Clive Hudson, the council's cabinet member for environment, said: "We have had an excellent take-up of the new service in other areas achieving a 50 per cent recycling rate – and we hope to see the same, if not better, in this final part of the scheme.

"We are totally committed to making this work and know a lot of people in the area are eager to get recycling. This is fantastic but we urge people to check their calendars. Until the scheme begins on October 21, the team won't be equipped to collect householders' new recycling containers."

So far more than 80,000 homes across the district are taking part in the scheme.

Coun Hudson said: "We expect this roll-out to benefit from the lessons learned from previous phases and have listened to feedback to make it a smooth transition."

There will be a series of public roadshows to support the scheme.

During the first week of the scheme, households will either receive a household waste and garden waste collection or a collection of paper, cardboard, glass bottles, cans and plastic bottles.
