The Hotel
By James Dransfield - Runner up
Mr. Howard was a man who liked to travel a lot and was making his way through Scotland when the unfortunate event occurred. It was the night of the 15th October when he came across an out of the way hotel on his way through the highlands. The name of the hotel was the hotel Blut and it was run by an old German couple called Mr. and Mrs. Sarg. He walked briskly up the cobble stone driveway, it was only 6 o'clock but it was already getting dark. It wasn't a particularly windy day either but it was cold, horribly cold. He had the strangest feeling someone was watching him from the bushes that ran either side of the driveway or that someone was perched like a bird in the large oak tree at the side of the hotel. Mr. Howard looked at the tree to further inspect what he thought to be truth. There was someone sitting in the tree. "Meow". The sound made Mr. Howard jump with fright and lose his gaze at the tree. It was a small black cat purring around his heels. "Go on, shoo" said Mr. Howard to the cat. The cat slinked away towards the hotel as if it had understood every word. Mr Howard looked back at the tree. The figure was gone.
Mr. Howard arrived at the hotel moments later. The hotel was a big old fashion castle made of stone and it had a large wooden door at the front. On the door was a knocker in the shape of a long needle. The knocker was made of wood and looked rather unkempt and splintery. Mr. Howard grabbed the knocker and slammed it against the door three times. The door creaked open on its old and rusty hinges and to Mr. Howard's surprise there was no-one stood on the other side of it to welcome him in. "come in" beckoned a voice from the other side of the room. Mr. Howard walked slowly towards the voice and into the warm castle. Crash! The doors slammed shut behind him. Mr. Howard turned in shock and let out a cry of horror. "It's okay it's just the wind" said the voice from the other side of the room. This reassured Mr Howard but he was still cautious about advancing.
He walked towards the check in desk to get booked in. there was a man stood there dressed in a very smart black suit, yet the suit had an eerie feel about it like a suit you would wear to a funeral. "Can I stay the night?" asked Mr. Howard
"You most certainly can, we don't get many guests up in our castle as it's tucked away" The man replied.
The mans name badge read Erik Sarg and he spoke surprisingly fluent English with a good English accent to say that he was German.
"Thanks" said Mr. Howard relieved to see a friendly face
"I've booked you into room 408" said Mr. Sarg "it's on the fourth floor at the end of the corridor"
"Thank you" said Mr. Howard as he was handed the key "it's quite a big hotel to say you don't get many guests"
"Yes, I know" replied Mr. Sarg rather slowly "I'll get my wife to take your bags to your room"
"That won't be necessary I'd like to take them myself" Concluded Mr. Howard "good night"
"Oh yes" said Mr. Sarg slowly whilst licking his lips "it will be John"
"How do you know my name?" asked Mr. Howard alarmed
"I erm, it's written on your luggage label" said Mr. Sarg nervously
John sensed something wasn't right
John made his way up the stairs and along the corridor on the fourth floor. He slowly walked across to the other end of the corridor to his room. He realised that the corridor was lit up, bizarrely enough, by candle light. He took the key out of his jacket pocket and inserted it into the lock and twisted. He heard a click. The door unlocked and to johns surprise the room was dark and didn't have a proper window, just a hole in the stone wall. This was going to be a long cold night. He dropped his luggage onto the bed that lay before him and tuned to unhook a candle from one of the brackets on the corridor wall. He walked into his room and placed the candle on his bedside table. He was rather tired and it had started raining outside so he was cold. He decided that he would go to bed early though as he looked at his watch he realised that it had somehow become 9 o'clock. Could it have really been 3 hours since he saw the figure in the tree which was now outside his window? John took off his shirt and climbed into bed. He drifted off into a deep sleep where he had a nightmare about the hotel manager climbing in through his window.
Crash! He woke with a start. It was pitch black in the room and the candle must have blown out with the wind coming in through the window. Crash! It was the lightening outside that was making the noise. He looked at his watch and it was 1 o'clock in the morning. He heard a flutter of wings come towards the window.
"Who's there?" he said with fear showing in his voice. Crash! The lightening illuminated the room and to his horror there was a figure perched on the window.
"Don't be afraid" said the man
It was Mr. Sarg the hotel manager
"What do you want" cried john
"What do I want?" Mr. Sarg asked himself "well, I want to suck your blood"
Mr. Sarg smiled a horrifyingly wide smile to reveal a pair of bright white fangs
"Arrgh" cried john as he headed for the door
John opened the door and stood there was a woman who also had bright white fangs protruding from her mouth.
"I see you've met my wife" said Mr. Sarg
John turned and realised that they where closing in on him. He dodged past Mr. Sarg and jumped out of the window and into the tree.
"He's getting away" cried Mr. Sarg "after him"
John descended from the tree and ran around the front of the house closely followed by Mr. Sarg. He saw the wooden needle shaped knocker on the front door and ripped it off its hinges. He turned 180 degrees and held out the stake. Mr. Sarg flew into it and withered in thin air along with the stake. John sat down in shock.
A cackle erupted from behind him. It was Mrs. Sarg and she had caught him. She stuck her long protruding white fangs into his neck and started to drain the blood.
"You're one of us now" she cackled "welcome to hotel Blut, your new home!"
