Blind cricket match went down well
SPORTS lovers in Sharlston had the opportunity to try out a game with a difference last weekend.
For the third year running, Old Sharlston Cricket Club hosted a special event to allow people the chance to play visually-impaired cricket with the aim of creating more awareness of the sport.
The event, on Sunday, September 7, also aimed to introduce people to the concept of the sport. And cricket fans without visual impairment could join in by wearing specially adapted glasses which created the impression of blindness or partial sight.
Eric Ball, president of Old Sharlston Cricket Club, said: “The club is at the beginning of a development process to provide good facilities for blind and disability cricket and we are committed to spreading the word.
“We are also looking to develop opportunities for young people to get involved in cricket generally.”
Blind cricket has been played in England and Wales since the 1940s.
During the event, free coaching was available and a demonstration match was played between Sharlston and a team of visually impaired players.
