Burn attack at play area

A SAVAGE fire attack has left a children's playground with thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Play equipment at a park just off Queen Elizabeth Road, in Eastmoor, was found to have been burnt to the ground.

The burns affected one unit with a ramp and slide, which has now been removed, and also wiped out several square metres of flooring.

Coun Olivia Rowley, who helped to give the park a 100,000 makeover in 2007, said she was "gutted" about the damage.

She said: "It's tremendously sad because the playgroud is so well used.

"Whoever has done this has done an enormous disservice to Eastmoor.

"The equipment was chosen by local parents and children and before this it had been free of vandalism.

"We've got officers looking at what can be done to remedy this. But with the Playbuilder scheme being withdrawn and capital budgets on hold it could be hard to find the funds."

Glynn Humphries, service director for cleaner greener, said: "The fire mainly affected one multi-play unit and the surrounding play surface, and that area is being made safe.

"We would ask that if anyone has any information, can they please contact local police so we can identify who is responsible and take appropriate action."

Anyone with information should contact Wakefield Central neighbourhood police team (NPT) on 01924 293282.
