Buyer bids for booze licence at Yorkshire Bank on Westgate

A REJUVENATION of Wakefield's Westgate area seemed under way this week when the empty Yorkshire Bank building came a step closer to being redeveloped.

An unnamed buyer has applied for an alcohol licence at the building, which has been empty for two years after the bank moved out under a series of branch closures.

The building could be brought back into public use if the application is passed by Wakefield council, which has already granted permission to change its use from bank to eaterie.

Roccos bar, also on Westgate, was granted a new alcohol licence last week after its owners agreed to 23 conditions imposed by the police.

CCTV, random drugs tests and door supervisors were agreed to after police objected to the application at a meeting of Wakefield Council's licensing committee.

Licensing officer PC Paul Shelton said the council and police were working together to encourage quality bars and restaurants to locate on Westgate.
