Cash boost for Horbury groups
COMMUNITY groups across Horbury are celebrating after a cash boost from their councillors.
Little ones at Jam playgroup, based at Horbury's St Peter and St Leonard Church, have been given 286.90 to replace an old shed which was leaking and rotting.
The cash came from the latest round of community chest grants approved by councillors Alyson Ripley, Graham Jesty and John Sharp on Tuesday.
May Wood, one of the Jam leaders, said: "Unfortunately the roof is leaking and the bottom is falling out of our shed so we decided to replace it."
The group, run by Mrs Wood, Sue Parton, Ann Squires and Carol Smith, started six years ago with just five children and now entertains 27 little ones and their parents each week.
The Friends of Horbury Library have also been given a grant from the Community Chest scheme of 666.
Supporters of the library, on Westfield Road, plan to raise cash for a series of health and fitness activities.
Ideas include buying a Nintendo Wii console to attract younger people into the library in the evenings.
The Friends would also like to encourage more links between old and young people in the town.
The Horbury Victoria Youth Band has received 486.93 to buy a mini tuba.
Secretary Arnold Tattersfield said: "Some of the youngsters are unable to handle a full-size tuba.
"So we will use the cash to buy a smaller version which is easier for them to use."
The band, which practices at the Bandroom, on Peel Street, is always on the look out for new members to join its youth section.
