City cop's joy at first triathlon "achievement"
GEARED-up fitness fanatics made a splash at the weekend for Scissett's first ever triathlon.
Police inspector Helen Brear, from Wakefield, was among at least 100 triathletes from across the country who took part in the event on Sunday organised by the West Yorkshire Police triathlete team co-ordinator John Levick.
Participants had to swim just over 400m at Scissett baths before cycling 16km and completing a 5km run.
The event was Inspector Brear’s first attempt at a triathlon and she said it would not be her last despite all the aches and pains.
The 35-year-old, who is the force’s regional swimming champion for her age group, said: “I’m getting married to my partner Richard in August so I set out with good intentions in February to lose a bit of weight and I thought training for this would be perfect.
“Unfortunately work commitments meant I didn’t actually get to do much training, so it was a case of turning up on the day and hoping for the best.
“The swim was easy and the cycle was ok, but the run was dreadful because I was dead on my legs by that point.”
But renowned for her love of a challenge, Inspector Brear was determined to finish – and she did.
She added: “I didn’t win any medals or anything but it was a real personal achievement and I am so glad I did it.”
Mr Levick, who takes part in about six events a year, hailed the triathlon a huge success.
He said: “For most of the competitors, this was their first taste of a triathlon.
“I provided a course that was both scenic and challenging. The atmosphere created by relatives and friends who came along to show their support was great and experienced triathletes provided confidence and encouragement too.
Finishers were rewarded with a T-shirt. Mr Levick, 45, added: “Lots of the participants suggested this would not be their last event so I will no doubt see them next year, which is brilliant.”
Kirklees Active Leisure sponsored the swim and Bike Shed of Scissett sponsored the cycle.
Podium Sports of Brockholes were sponsors of the run.
