Community Crigglestone, West Bretton & Newmillerdam- Updated July 9th

WEST BRETTON SCHOOL: Last week was Arts Week at Bretton School. On Monday and Tuesday a visiting environmental artist met with Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 pupils. On Tuesday, Years 5 and 6 children walked to Yorkshire Sculpture Park with 2 visiting philosophers. On Wednesday, Key Stage 2 children were involved in a drama workshop run by Daniel Walker of "Performing Earth" and on Thursday Years 3 and 4 met children of a similar age from Horbury Bridge School as part of a bridging project. On Friday, all children took part in a musical extravaganza and Headteacher, Mrs Womersley, presented the Artsmark Gold Award to Mrs Jenkins.

WEST BRETTON PARISH COUNCIL: Next Monday, West Bretton Parish Council meets in the Village Hall for its July meeting at 7.30pm. Residents are cordially invited to attend and to put questions to the Council during the allotted agenda item.

STRAWBERRY TEA: The final amount of money raised for the Church in West Bretton at the Strawberry Tea at the home of Jennifer and Ian McKinlay two weeks ago was 500. Thanks to everyone who supported the event and made donations.

CONCERT:This Sunday at 3pm in West Bretton Village Hall, the Hade Edge Community Choir will be supported by the Barnsley School of Irish Dance in a concert organised by the Church in West Bretton. Admission is 4 (including cheese and wine) and there will be a raffle.

COMPLINE: Last Monday, a service of Compline was conducted in the Church in West Bretton by Leonard Bartle. There will be no service this Monday.

AFTERNOON GET TOGETHER: Next Wednesday, the Afternoon Get Together will be held in the Church in West Bretton from 2pm to 4pm and everyone is welcome to attend.

WEST BRETTON CHURCH

COUNCIL: There will be a meeting of the Church Council in Church next Thursday at 7.30pm. Rev David Hall will chair the meeting.

NEWMILLERDAM METHODIST CHURCH: During June and early July the church at Newmillerdam has been involved in a variety of christian activities. Over the weekend June 26-27, children aged 9-12 from across the Wakefield Methodist Circuit used the church as a base for a fun weekend and sleepover. Led by the Rev Dr Mike Bossingham and assisted by the circuit youth leaders, the children enjoyed a weekend of multi media activities and were joined by church members for an all age worship service on the Sunday morning. On Saturday July 3, members took part in a flying supper around 5 of the circuit churches. The final part of the meal was cheese and biscuits at West Wakefield Church followed by a talk on the work of the Missionary Aviation Fellowship, a fun act by children and adults and a concert by the Sandal Methodist choir. On Sunday evening July 4, Rothwell Church provided the venue for a circuit service at which two of the circuit local preachers were presented with 40 year service certificates. The church garden party will take place on Saturday July 10 at 719 Barnsley Road (next to the St. Pierre Hotel) from noon to 4pm. All are welcome to join this event, which will have plant and cake stalls, teas and refreshments, barbeque, ballgames and other activities.

CRIGGLESTONE METHODIST CHURCH: At the Thursday Fellowship meeting led by Mavis Hobson, Jean Froggett gave a humorous talk entitled "It's funny what I find in my notebook." The preacher on Sunday was Rev. Andrew Stead. Malcolm Gray was steward and readers were Mavis Hobson and Alan Shires. The preacher at the 10.45 service this Sunday 11th will be Paul Hayes. On Thursday July 15 at 11am, Donald Woolley of Ossett will give a talk and presentation on the work of The Mission Aviation Fellowship which provides emergency relief and medical aid indeveloping countries.

FOOTBALL GALA: The Hall Green Junior Football Club Gala will be held this Sunday at Castle Meadow Playing Fields.
