'Congestion' fury over plan for new housing

Road safety fears have risen again over 'dangerous' new housing plans for a disused quarry near connecting routes between Ossett and Horbury.

Developers have been trying to build new homes on the quarry, off Quarry Hill in Horbury, for 30 years.

This week the plans came a step closer to reality after agents John R Paley Associates submitted plans to Wakefield Council to build a new access road near the Quarry Inn pub.

There have been several crashes on Quarry Hill, which has a 30mph speed limit and is often used by motorists heading to Ossett.

John McLeod, 55, of Laburnum Grove, said: "Quarry Hill is an extremely busy road especially during morning and evening rush hours.

"The access road needs very careful scrutiny because I am not convinced that it would be a safe option to put it where the developers are proposing."

Sue Daniels, 60, of Laburnum Grove, was one of the many people living near to the site who protested against the original plans which were finally approved in 2008.

She said: "The road is already very congested. It is already a bad place to get in and out of, or to park.

"It could be dangerous for people living there and near-by."

Coun John Sharp said: "I share the residents' concerns over the access to the site because of the problems we have already had on the road with congestion and accidents."

An outline application was first submitted in 1990 but was rejected by planners at Wakefield Council.

Then in 1996 another plan was put forward but later withdrawn by the developer, John Litherland.

Finally an outline application submitted in 2003 was given the go ahead.

In 2008 a full application to build 36 homes which was approved.

But since then the developers have reduced the number of homes to 26 after complaints from residents and local councillors.

Wakefield Council planners are now considering the application for the road but no date for a decision has been given.
