Crash home couple's barrier hopes
COUNCIL bosses have agreed to look at replacing a barrier to stop cars smashing into a couple's home.
During the past 23 years, seven cars have smashed into Norah and Derek Holland’s home on Hall Cliffe Crescent, and demolished their wall.
Now more than 100 people have signed their petition to have a barrier, removed 30 years ago by Wakefield Council, put back in place.
The motorway style barrier on the corner of their street and Hall Cliffe Road protected their home and stopped cars veering off the steep, winding road.
They also want the road to be gritted more frequently during icy conditions.
Mrs Holland, 77, said: “We’ve had a fantastic amount of support from people living here who agree that the barrier needs to be replaced.
“I’ve also had a meeting with Coun Graham Jesty and he promised he would definitely try to get some sort of barrier put back on the road and put Hall Cliffe Road back on the gritting list.”
The council took away the barrier in the 1980s after concerns it was not safe.
This week it announced it has instructed an expert company to assess whether the road would be suitable for a new barrier.
A spokeswoman at the council said: “We are currently in negotiations with the specialist contractors who are needed to provide this kind of audit.”
Once the audit has been carried out the council will make a final decision.
