Easter fun is quite eggs-traordinary
Egg-crazy schoolchildren across the town were decorating eggs this week as part of fun-packed Easter activities.
Children from all year groups at South Parade Primary School, on Fairfield Road, put their minds in motion and thought of unique designs, then were encouraged to collect resources at home and bring them into school.
They then got to work on their Easter masterpieces, using a range of materials such as sequins, feathers and even Lego.
The eggs, ranging in design from traditional animal themes to characters from television shows, were judged at lunch time and two winning children from each class won chocolate Easter eggs.
Fun was also had with the naming of the eggs, with the youngsters encouraged to use word plays involving the word 'egg'.
One of the pupils, Oliver Scott, prepared a model of an elderly egg man sitting in a chair reading a copy of the Wakefield Eggspress.
Nigel Blakeley, headteacher at the school, said: "It's all very corny but the naming of the eggs was almost as much fun as making them.
"The children absolutely love 'egg day', and we always see some real creativity from them. They've been using such a wide variety of resources, and I've been very impressed with a lot of the designs we've seen this year. Some of them have been very topical."
l Pupils at Gawthorpe Community Primary School, on High Street, were decorating Easter bonnets.
They also had an egg decorating competition, where the children came up with designs themed on Dancing on Ice, Lady Gaga, wrestling, football and skateboarding.
Sally Adams, year one teacher at the school, said: "The children have really enjoyed it and it has been good to see their parents getting really involved too."
