Major funding bid for new Wakefield road schemes

BIDS for millions of pounds worth of government funding to ease congestion on the city's busiest roads will be launched next week.

Wakefield Council's cabinet members are expected to approve the submission of bids for cash overseen by a body called the Regional Transport Board, when they meet on Tuesday.

The council will compete against other authorities for the money, which it needs for the building of a new city road system, aimed at accommodating the three multi-million regeneration projects.

A report prepared for the cabinet meeting said the council would be expected to provide a minimum of 10 per cent match funding for the schemes, in support of any successful bid, which would amount to around 12m.

Ian Wiper, Wakefield Council's service director for transportation and highways, said: "This process is at a very early stage and is reporting on schemes that have been presented to the Regional Transport Board for entry to regional funding allocation.

"The schemes have been identified within our transport scheme and these are proposals which are dependent on funding."

If succesful a north Wakefield gateway would include a one-way gyratory system, incorporating Northgate and Bradford Road, and include a park and ride scheme at the junction of Bradford Road.

And a south gateway package would have park and ride schemes and possible bus lanes, which would affect Denby Dale Road.

Two park and ride sites, one close to Aberford Road, and one near to Doncaster Road, would form part of the plan for an east Wakefield gateway.

In the city centre an access to the Waterfront scheme would include a link to the city centre to the Waterfront but this would not be planned until after 2014.

Other improvements would be made to Kirkgate Station, the Chantry House roundabout and the Kirkgate traffic management scheme, which would make Upper Kirkgate a bus-only route into the city centre.
