New £11m swimming pool plan for Wakefield

A NEW £11m swimming pool is planned for the site of the city's former Sun Lane Baths.

Wakefield Council has released this artist's impression of how the pool and fitness centre may look.

The city has been starved of a serious swimming venue since the controversial closure of Sun Lane in 2006 and problems with the pool at Lightwaves during 2008. Both were closed amid fears of public safety caused by structural problems.

This week the council announced it wants to know what the people of the city think about this latest design.

Coun Denise Jeffery, deputy leader and Wakefield Council's cabinet member for sport and regeneration, said: "Last year we promised people we would work towards building a fantastic new pool in the city and we are now moving forward in earnest.

"This is a major project and one we are determined to get right – these things don't happen overnight and a lot of work has been going on in the background. Now we can show people our initial thoughts and look forward to hearing people's responses as we move towards a planning application early next year."

The sporting complex could include an eight-lane 25-metre pool, a learner's pool, a fitness suite and health suite, spa bath, steam room and sauna. Features will include a moveable floor in both pools to provide flexibility in its uses. It could also accommodate 200 spectators and the plan includes a cafe.

Sun Lane baths were designed by Wakefield architect Percy Morris. They opened in 1937 and were demolished in January 2007.

The council begins a two-week consultation period on Monday, November 30.
