New team takes off

SLAM dunkin' basketball skills are being honed by a group of enterprising teenagers.

A group of basketball loving teens have set up their own team with the help of crime-reduction charity Nacro.

The 16 players approached the charity simply wanting to play but eventually took control of the group, getting more involved in planning the sessions.

It soon built up to weekly sessions at Lightwaves Leisure Centre, as well as extra practise sessions at Queen Elizabeth Park.

In addition, Nacro were able to help the players apply for funding from NHS Wakefield District, which donated 500.

The money has been used to hire a professional coach, book places on a basketball training course and buy a full basketball kit and equipment. Nacro’s Gareth Hamlet, Wakefield Positive Futures sports co-ordinator said: “The success of the basketball group has been great.

“The group has grown week by week and is now in a position where they can manage themselves.

“It is great to see a group of young people get involved in something positive.”
