Poets welcome politician

A WAKEFIELD poetry group initiated a new patron as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

The Black Horse Poets held a ceremony to welcome MP Mary Craigh into the group on Friday at Henry Boons pub on Westgate. And the political connection was further underlined by the presence of former Wakefield MP, Walter Harrison.

Louis Kasatkin, president of the group, said: "The event went well. Mary seems very empathetic to what we're doing and very keen on poetry.

"During the evening we had some poetry readings and Mary quoted in the original Italian from Dante's Inferno, which certainly impressed me."

Marking the group's 10th anniversary, Mr Kasatkin said: "One of my long-term objectives is to make poetry as exciting as rock and roll."

The Black Horse Poets will take part in Clarence Park Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27.
