Police warn shed owners
Residents are being warned to keep their garden sheds secure after a series of overnight burglaries in Ossett this week.
Sheds in the Roundwood Road and Teall Street areas have been hit by burglars who unscrewed the hinges of the doors so that they did not need to smash them open.
Police have urged homeowners to keep their sheds secure and be aware that the beginning of spring is a time when burglaries of this nature are particularly common.
Det Chf Insp Phil Wiggins, of Wakefield district police, said: "A few simple security measures can reduce the risk of becoming a crime victim. Gardening tools and furniture are not cheap but they are very saleable items for the thief.
"Another good reason to secure sheds and garages is that the tools contained within them could potentially be used by criminals to break into the home themselves."
The police advise people to keep their shed or garage sturdy, fit a quality lock on the door and make sure windows are secured.
Fitting a grille or bars can help to prevent access, and a blind or net curtains can stop would-be thieves from looking inside.
Engraving, stamping or painting property with a postcode is also said to have a deterrent effect upon thieves.
