Putting fizz into learning
A dazzling display of frothing test tubes and colour-changing reactions was the ideal finale for a week celebrating science at an Ossett primary school.
Awestruck pupils at Towngate Primary School, on Whitley Spring Road, were treated to an exciting science stage show hosted by Bradford College lecturer Ian Stewart, as part of National Science and Engineering Week.
Earlier in the week they were taught how to make slime by a team of entertainers from Mad Science of Yorkshire & Humber.
All week the pupils had been looking into scientific themes that interested them, such as space, microorganisms and the ocean.
They were then encouraged to put their imaginations into motion by writing poems or drawing about new things they had learnt.
Kate Frampton, science leader at the school, said the programme was a huge success.
She said: "This is the second time we've run the week by merging science with art and writing, and the children always enjoy it.
"We showed them close-up microscopic images of things without telling them what they were, and just got them to write about what they could see. Some of the language we got from them was incredible, their brains were really working.
"Pupils at this school have a lot of enthusiasm for science and they were really impressed with the hands-on experiments they were able to do."
