Romanian man raped woman 'to get a place to eat, sleep and learn English'

A HOMELESS Romanian man raped a young woman at Kirkgate Railway Station so he could be jailed to have a place to eat, sleep and learn English.

Ali Majlat, 35, also robbed his 21-year-old victim during the attack while he was in the city to visit his brother an inmate at HMP Wakefield, Leeds Crown Court heard today. (Monday.)

He sexually assaulted her and stole her phone, purse and jewellery at about 8.30pm at the isolated city centre station on Sunday, October 12.

Majlat, of no fixed abode, admitted rape and robbery but he denied assaulting the woman and causing her actual bodily harm.

Judge Alastair McCallum, reading from a psychiatrist's report asked defending barrister, Mark McKone, if it was true that Majlat had said: "When I was on the railway station I thought I should rape this lady in order to get a place to eat and sleep and learn the English language."

Judge McCallum said "that is bizarre" when Mr McKone confirmed Majlat had used similar words.

The judge said Majlat was looking at a possible life sentence or indefinite imprisonment for the public's protection.

Majlat was further remanded in custody until April when he is expected to be sentenced.
