Royal Mail's Normanton depot goes on strike

POSTAL services ground to a halt this morning as 140 transport workers went on strike at Royal Mail's Normanton depot.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) strike will halt work at the depot, Yorkshire's main distribution centre, for 24 hours from 4am today.

The stoppage is expected to affect the delivery of A-level results and cause delays for several days as staff catch up on the backlog.

Drivers are in dispute over changes to pay and shift patterns they say could leave them thousands of pounds worse off.

The CWU has accused royal mail bosses of forcing through the changes without proper consultation.

The strike is one of 12 which has seen 1,300 staff walk out at centres including London, Birmingham, Peterborough and Bristol.
