Safety is the message
FIRES were put out and victims were cut from crashed vehicles – but there was no need for panic – the scenes were created by the emergency services.
The demonstrations were part of Ossett Fire Station's Community Safety Day.
More than 100 people from Ossett and Gawthorpe watched as firefighters put out chip pan fires and rescued people from cars.
John Iveson, crew manager at Ossett fire station, said: "We felt it was really successful and got the message across about crashes and the importance of vehicle safety.
"People who came along were very complimentary about the day and said they enjoyed it.
"We were showing people what we do and how to avoid some of the dangers we deal with.
"We were keen to tell people about smoke alarms, which is our paramount message these days."
And several families signed up for free home fire safety checks.
The event was also organised by the Maypole Children's Centre on High Street, Gawthorpe.
Helen Levitt, parents support advisor from the children's centre, said events like this were crucial for breaking down barriers between the emergency services and the public.
She said: "We found that before the day the children were scared of the police, but the event really helped children feel like they could approach policemen in the future should they ever need to.
"This was the first event in our summer programme. Anybody interested in our other programmes can call by the children's centre anytime."
