St George set to parade – but on foot
YOU'D have a hard time finding pictures of St George without his trusty steed, but for Horbury's first St George's Day parade, England's patron saint will just have to walk.
Health and safety fears have meant the cost of insuring an equestrian procession would make it too expensive.
Coun Alyson Ripley, who is organising the event, said: “I spoke to a friend of mine who helps organise the Maypole Feast in Osset to book a horse but they said they haven’t been able to use one for two years.
“The Maypole Queen has ridden on horseback for more than a century in their procession but insurance costs and health and safety regulations put an end to that.”
The Express’ appeal to find a St George for the procession was unsuccessful, so Wakefield parliamentary candidate Alex Story has stepped up to don the armour.
Mr Story, 35, said: “This health and safety thing that blights our country today is what stopped us from getting a horse but I haven’t ridden one since I was 12 and would probably squash it anyway as I’m 6ft 8in.
“I’m very keen for the event to go well and hope everybody has a great time.”
The procession will start from Horbury Library at 6pm on Friday, ending at Slazenger's Sports and Social Club on Southfield Lane, Addington, where a community party will be held.
Tickets for the party are 2 for adults and 1 for children, including access to a funfair and an 1800 fireworks display after dark.
Burgers and hot beef and pork sandwiches will also be available.
A brass band was planned for the procession but none have yet been available – anyone who knows a band available to play on Friday should contact Coun Ripley on 0780 9717314.
