St Peter's double whammy
HORBURY St Peter's pupils battled it out to win the annual Slazengers Primary School Hockey Tournament for the second year in a row.
They managed to claim victory in a tight match against Netherton J&I School.
More than 80 pupils took part including children from Horbury Primary School, West Bretton Junior and Infants plus three teams from South Leeds.
Both boys and girls lined up against each other for the tournament at Slazengers Hockey Club, on Southfield Lane in Addingford.
Claire Mills, school sports co-ordinator, said: “It was a very gloomy, wet afternoon, however it was brightened up by the enthusiasm of the pupils.”
Organisers hope the success of the tournament will help recruit new players for Slazengers Hockey Club junior teams.
Steve Wood, chairman of the junior section, said: “Hockey competes with football for a great deal of the kids and they have commitments to so many other sports.
“But in hockey we pride ourselves on being an educational sport – we teach them the right way and all the rules and regulations that need to be followed.
“And as a sport both boys and girls play alongside each other – they are treated equally as sportsmen and sportswomen.”
The U12s team start training at 9.15am followed by the U14s team at 10.15am on Sunday mornings.
