War crimes general had throat cut in 'jail attack'
THREE prisoners accused of attacking a Serbian war criminal in Wakefield Jail have appeared before city magistrates.
Former Bosnian Serb general Radislav Krstic suffered cuts to his face and throat while in his cell at the Love Lane jail on May 7 and was hospitalised.
It is alleged Iliyas Khalid, 24, Indrit Krasniqi, 23, and Quam Ogumbiyi, 29, wounded Krstic with intent.
Wakefield Magistrates' Court heard Krstic was serving his sentence in the high security jail in respect of a genocide conviction for his involvement in the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia in 1995. It was Europe's worst massacre since the Second World War – more than 8,000 Muslim boys and men were massacred.
Krstic, a former general, was sentenced to 35 years after being convicted of aiding and abetting genocide during the Srebrenica massacre.
Prosecutor Richard Hebbert told magistrates that Krstic travelled from jail to jail to serve his sentence, which was imposed at the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. Krstic has been in Wakefield Jail since 2009.
Under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Britain is obliged to take a share of prisoners convicted at the tribunal.
Mr Hebbert asked city magistrates to send all three defendants' cases to Leeds Crown Court.
Khalid, Krasniqi and Ogumbiyi all appeared via video link from prison. No application for bail was made and all three were remanded in custody pending a preliminary hearing before a judge on Monday, July 26.
