What is the ozone layer?

The ozone layer is the 'Shield in the Sky". All life on earth depends on the existence of this layer of gas called the ozone layer.

The ozone molecule is composed of three atoms of oxygen and is an extremely rare component of the earth's atmosphere: in every 10 000 000 air molecules, about three are ozone. More than 90% of ozone is found in the upper atmosphere (stratosphere).

The ozone layer, as a shield, absorbs all but a small fraction of the harmful and damaging UV-B radiation coming from the sun. This layer is therefore, very important in protecting human, plant and animal lives from UV-B which, in high doses, can be particularly damaging to natural life as we know it today.
