A LORRY driver charged with causing the death of a policeman who was killed while helping a stranded motorist on the M1 has appeared in court.

PC Mark Goodlad, 41, died from multiple injuries after he was hit by a lorry as he helped a woman on the hard shoulder of the motorway at Crigglestone.

Andrew Abernethy, 45, is charged with causing the death of PC Goodlad by dangerous driving on the southbound carriageway of the M1 close to junction 39 on October 24 last year.

Abernethy, of Rembrandt Walk, Oldham, appeared at Wakefield Magistrates’ Court this morning (Wednesday) but spoke only to confirm his personal details.

The case was sent for trial at Leeds Crown Court where Abernethy faces a preliminary hearing next week.

Abernethy was granted conditional bail.
