The wider aim is to get visitors to discover how they use the right equipment to get close to nature.

Binoculars and telescopes are tricky to understand, particularly when trying to balance quality and price.

Viking Optics expert Rob Whyatt will be on hand on Saturday and Sunday (November 10 and 11) from 10am to 3pm to decode the jargon, offer advice on current equipment and help understand what to look for in optical equipment.

Sally Granger, visitor experience officer, said: “Binoculars are an essential piece of equipment for any birdwatcher, but they are a really personal item and what is right for one person might not fit another.

“As they are such a popular Christmas gift, this event is an opportunity to get hands-on advice from an expert and find the right pair for you.”

This December young visitors will also be able to get into the festive spirit throughout the school holidays with a free ‘Festive Discovery’ quiz trail from December 17 to January 6. Anyone who returns their completed answer sheet can collect a special sticker.
