A MAN was killed and a woman was seriously injured after being hit by a car outside a pub.

The pair were waiting to cross the road close to the Dunkirk pub in Denby Dale when a BMW M3 careered into them after being involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Astra.

The 55-year-old local man died at the scene and a 55-year-old woman was taken to Barnsley Hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the BMW had been travelling along Barnsley Road towards Denby Dale when the Astra pulled out from Dry Hill Lane and into the main carriageway.

The BMW left the road and hit both pedestrians.

The incident happened at about 7.45pm on Thursday and the road was closed until 2.30am the next morning.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bailed.
