The first bricks of the £8.8m project to rebuild Wakefield Westgate railway station will be laid today.

Simon Burns MP, the Minister of State for Transport, is visiting the station this morning (Tuesday) as the work begins.

The station is the first to be built on the East Coast Main Line in decades.

Mr Burns will be joined at Westgate by the leader of Wakefield Council, Peter Box, as well as representatives from East Coast, Metro and Network Rail.

This month work has also started on a £4.5m project to redevelop Kirkgate Railway Station after a three-year campaign by the Express and its readers to put staff on the platforms and improve safety.
