A MUM with a passion for home-cooked food has been given the seal of approval from other parents who voted her café her the most family friendly in the city.
The Waterside Café in Newmillerdam beat big name chains including Frankie and Benny’s in an online poll by website www.mumsnet.com
Jackie Ward opened the eaterie, which used to be an Indian restaurant, seven months ago and she was determined to make it a more than just a place to grab a sandwich and a coffee.
Mrs Ward, 35, said: “We do a kids’ club on Fridays, we have toddler and baby groups, we also have water colour and pottery classes upstairs.
“We like to make sure everyone has a good, friendly experience - it’s not just about a place to eat, it’s for the whole community.”
After having her daughter, Caila, now 13, Mrs Ward experienced how difficult it was to find cafés that welcomed young children.
She said: “In some places the staff might turn their noses up at people who walk in with prams.
“We’re really friendly to everyone from babies to builders to pensioners and everyone in between.”
All the food is home-cooked on the Barnsley Road premises.
