Netherton community news

FIRST AID: Summer is always a busy time for the Netherton Division of Yorkshire Rose First Aid, particularly as it covers a large number of athletics events. Beginning with the West Yorkshire Schools Athletics Championships at Spenborough, it also covered the Disport Yorkshire Junior Athletics Championships at South Leeds Stadium, two West Yorkshire Track and Field League meetings and the Pontefract Athletic Club Open meeting at Thornes Stadium, Wakefield, a Playground 2 Podium Assessment day at the England Institute of Sport, Sheffield, a Wakefield Schools Athletics meeting at Thornes Stadium, the Deaf Athletics Championships at the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster, the Birdsedge 6 Mile race and the 3rd Reindeer Romps at Overton, once again won by Shaun Dimelow (Barnsley) with Wakefield’s Chris Ward 3rd and, in 6th place, Wakefield’s Annabelle Mason, who is the National U/16 Fell Race Champion, the Ladies winner. Ossett and Netherton Galas were also covered.

THREE’S COMPANY PLUS THREE: The band played at two venues in July, at Elm Lodge Elderly People’s Home in Horbury on July 23 and St Luke’s Church, Overton, on July 29. From the two venues £150 was raised, to be shared between the Clover Unit (WOLF) and Wakefield Hospice.

BUSES: In July I travelled on 46 buses and 41 were on time (89%). There was little difference between the two companies that serve this area. I travelled on 22 Centrebus buses and 19 were on time (86%) while Arriva were only slightly better. In their case I travelled on 21 buses with, again, 19 on time (90%). Of the five buses not on time three were only five minutes late (2 Centrebus, 1 Arrva), but Centrebus did have one bus that was 25 minutes late and Arriva one that was a whopping 35 minutes late.
