New Aldi store to open today as part of £8.5m scheme

A new Aldi store will open in Featherstone today, as part of a £8.5m project to regenerate the former Crystal Springs factory site and create 100 new jobs.

Store manager Alison Precious and representatives from Featherstone Lions ARLFC, who the supermarket will sponsor, will mark it officially open.

And Golden envelopes containing prizes will be handed to the first 100 people in the queue, after a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning.

Developer Dearne Estates has been working to regenerate the Wakefield Road site, which will also include a B&M Bargains store. B&M is scheduled to open on Wednesday, November 30.

Ben Ellis, of Dearne Estates, said: “This important £8.5m regeneration project will bring around 100 new jobs to the area.

“We are pleased that we have been able to deliver investment in the Featherstone area quickly. The new buildings are a significant improvement to the outlook of the site.”

Featherstone councillor Graham Isherwood welcomed news of the stores’ opening dates.

He said: “The redevelopment of the site is fetching employment into the area. This, along with the new houses being built in the town, shows that people are at last taking notice of Featherstone as a place to invest.”

Aldi will open from 8am until 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sundays.
