Next phase of huge housing development planned

Taylor-Wimpey has submitted the blueprints for the homes off Pontefract Road, to the east of the town centre.

The project is the next step in the Colliers Court plan which has already seen more than 150 homes built.

In total, 450 houses could eventually occupy the sites.

The latest plans submitted to Wakefield Council planning department are for a range of two to four-bedroom properties.

The application shows that access on to the new site would be from Pontefract Road, with plans for a new junction.

Featherstone ward councillor, Graham Isherwood, had raised concerns prior to the first phase being given planning permission in 2014.

He felt the surge in residents would put added traffic pressure on Pontefract Road.

He says he will be monitoring the latest development.

“It’s a question of suck it and see,” he told the Express.

“I never had an issue with the first phase, I was just concerned with what 450 homes in total will do.

“There were no real problems with the first phase and I wanted to see how that operated, so if these houses are built, let’s see how that goes.

“The first houses did that area up, there’s no two ways about that, but I will be keeping a close eye on this application and checking on it.”

As a greenfield site, the land for the next phase of development has never been built on, although it was earmarked 
for housing as part of the local plan.

No date has been set for when the issue will be discussed by planners.
