FAMILIES have got their buckets and spades at the ready to welcome the seaside into the city centre.

The Bull Ring will be filled with sand and beach vibes when Wakefield Council’s ‘Seaside in the City’ event takes place.

Donkeys and a helter skelter will provide family entertainment throughout the day.

There will be water balls which children can climb into, trampolines, face painters, circus skills workshops and a craft and produce market.

And a steel band will perform.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for culture, said: “All the rides and activities on the day are free, which means everyone can get involved in all the fun of the seaside.

“It is set to be a great day out, with lots going on, so lets keep our fingers crossed for good weather.”

The Ridings will provide 1950s-themed entertainment, including Punch & Judy, tasty treats, singing, dancing and giveaways throughout the weekend.

And at Trinity Walk there will be free candy floss, games, rides and face painting.

The council has already given away hundreds of free buckets and spades for children ahead of the event.

And more will be available, on a first-come, first-served basis, from Wakefield market hall, on Union Street, tomorrow, Saturday, August 11.

The seaside in the city event takes place between 11am and 4pm on Saturday, August 18.
