THE newest recruits to the canine crime fighting division have been named after gold medal-winning athletes after a public vote.

West Yorkshire Police introduced their latest litter to Express readers last week.

They set up an online poll to find new Olympic-themed names for two of the German Shepherds.

Puppy A was named Daley after former decathlete Daley Thompson, with 47 per cent of the vote.

And Puppy B was named Jess after former heptathlon world champion Jessica Ennis, taking 55 per cent of the vote.

Dog Trainer Sgt Rick Green said: “We’d like to thank the public for participating in the puppy poll.

“Daley and Jess will now be housed with carer families where we hope they will start to show some of the signs of a police dog in the making.”

Daley and Jess were among five new puppies to be born at West Yorkshire Police’s Operations Support Services base at Carr Gate.

They were the 22nd litter born at the in house breeding centre.

Once the pups are old enough they will leave their carer families’ homes and begin specialist training with expert dog handlers.

And when they are ready they will help officers sniff out drugs, detect explosives and search for missing people.
