THE opening date for the city’s new £10m swimming pool has been announced.
Wakefield Council said yesterday that Sun Lane Leisure, on Sun Lane, will open on Saturday, October 20.
Council leader Coun Peter Box told a meeting of full council on Wednesday that he was hoping a Paralympic swimmer would visit the pool to swim the first length on its opening day.
And new photographs of the pool, changing rooms and reception area were also released this week.
Sun Lane will include a 25m six-lane pool, a learner pool, a fitness suite, a multi-use activity studio, spectator viewing area and public café.
It will also have toilets and changing facilities for disabled people.
Council bosses had hoped to have it open by September, but told the Express last month that the construction work would not be finished in time.
The swimming pool at Lightwaves will remain open until Sun Lane opens.
A council spokesman said details of the launch event would be confirmed over the next few weeks.
The original Sun Lane pool closed in June 2006 when it was found to be in danger of collapsing.
