TRAVELLERS could move into Walton if plans for a new campsite are approved.
Members of Walton Parish Council say they were contacted by planning consultants who put forward a proposal for a site comprising 18 pitches on a plot of land in between The Balk and The Grove.
An application for planning permission has yet to be submitted to Wakefield Council.
But it is believed the firm, Green Planning Solutions, want to discuss their ideas with local residents at a public meeting during the next few months.
Coun Maureen Cummings said: “There have been rumours circulating around the village about this. Land at the top of The Grove may or may not be used as a future travellers site.
“We would look at this proposal as with any other, and would assess it to see if it fits in with policy.”
Green Planning Solutions is run by former Liberal Democrat MP Matthew Green – known as the ‘Gyspy King’ – and has represented travelling communities in other areas of the country.
But the firm refused to comment on the Walton proposal.
Plans to build a 250-capacity care home on the same plot of land were met with backlash by residents last year.
They were later put to rest by a planning committee on the grounds that the development was too large and would be a road safety hazard.
A proposal in the council’s Local Development Framework (LDF) to allocate land off Owl Lane, Gawthorpe, as a potential location for travellers also sparked outrage.
Ossett Town Hall was bombarded with around 700 protesters at a meeting to discuss the proposal last September.
