Police appeal after armed robbery in Rothwell

AN armed robber who held up a post office is on the run.

A man, armed with a black handgun, threatened a female member of staff and demanded cash during the in Rothwell yesterday (Wednesday).

The gunman left empty-handed after the woman activated the alarm.

The incident happened on Wood Lane at about 11.15am.

Witnesses reported seeing him drop the gun and then pick it up again as he made off along Wood Lane and down Haighside Drive.

Armed police and the force helicopter searched for the gunman but he managed to escape.

He was aged between 20 and 30, and was about 5ft 7 ins tall.

He was wearing a black hooded jacket with the hood up and had a black scarf across his face.
