A GANG of arsonists torched Dovecote cemetery.

And the building was badly fire damaged after its archway entrance went up in flames.

The North West neighbourhood police team (NPT) have increased patrols around the cemetery, on Dovecote Lane, and are studying CCTV footage to try and identify the firestarters.

Inspector Jo Mercer of NPT said: ‘We are investigating an incident of arson at Dovecote Cemetery in Horbury which happened on the evening of Monday, July 30, and would appeal for anyone with information to contact us.

“Patrols in and around the area have been increased in a bid to identify those believed to be responsible.”

The CCTV footage, captured by security cameras at neighbouring St Hilda’s School, shows members of a gang.

Insp Mercer said: “There is some CCTV footage of the incident and active enquiries are ongoing.”

Wakefield Council owns the building.

Glynn Humphries, Service Director for Cleaner and Greener, said: “We take reports of this mindless vandalism very seriously as it is costs the council time and money, which could otherwise go on much needed services.

“Anyone with any information should contact the police.”

North West NPT ask anyone with any information to contact them on 01924 294671, or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
