Police have warned that a gang of Chinese women who have already stolen more than £93,000 worth of jewellery and ornaments could be operating in Wakefield.

CCTV images of three suspects, who are all aged between 30 and 50 and speak Cantonese, have been released by investigating officers.

A string of fraud offences have taken place in Newcastle, but police have warned the scammers could be operating in West Yorkshire.

Temporary Superintendent Bruce Storey said: “The offenders seem to be targeting those in the Chinese community and lying to the victims about carrying out some kind of religious blessing on their expensive belongings.

“We know that they can be quite persuasive and have managed to con victims into handing over thousands of pounds worth of jewellery and personal items, as well as cash.

“The offenders could still be operating in Newcastle or they may have moved on to another area of the country - we are linking in with other forces to see if there has been any similar crimes across the country.”
