Pirate flags have been spotted flying above the city centre.

The Jolly Roger flags can be seen at several places in the city centre, including the Bull Ring and Wood Street police station.

And they are promoting Wakefield Council’s Seaside in the City event, which will bring all the fun of the seaside to the city centre next weekend.

The event, running next Saturday and Sunday, includes an 18-foot pirate ship, a Helter Skelter, funfair rides and other family entertainment.

Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for Culture, said: “We are bringing the seaside to the city next weekend, as this free family event returns. There will be everything you need for a great day out at the seaside, including the beach, donkeys and even a helter skelter.

“It is great to see the city centre working together to deliver this hugely popular event. We hope as many families as possible can join us again this year and fingers crossed that the sun will do too.”
