Cyclists seized a golden opportunity to ride freely and safely on city centre roads on Sunday.

Wakefield Council said about 1,500 people took part in The Big Cycle, which aimed to promote cycling as a way of keeping fit and having fun.

It also included free sporting sessions, entertainment, information stalls and a market.

City centre roads were closed off so that people could cycle safely along the route.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for sport, said: “The event was a big success with lots of people bringing their bikes and joining in the big cycle ride. It was especially great to see so many families enjoying themselves and taking part in all the free activities.

“We are continuing to work with partners to provide cycling opportunities across the district as part of our cycling legacy and events like this reinforce our determination to making Wakefield a healthier city. I urge everyone to get involved with one of their local rides.”
