WAKEFIELD fell silent at the weekend to remember fallen heroes from wars past and present.
The Mayor of Wakefield, Coun Elaine Blezard led a serivce at St John’s Church, Wentworth Street, on Friday evening, where the Wakefield Met Band and Crigglestone Amateur Dramatic Society performed.
It was followed by poppy planting at Wakefeild Cathedral on Saturday, and crowds gathered for the annual city centre remembrance parade led by the Royal British Legion, on Sunday.
Leader of Wakefield Council, Coun Peter Box, who laid a wreath in Wakefield, said: “Sunday was a time for people to come together to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and those who continue to serve in our armed forces. I was pleased that so many people gathered by the new war memorial outside county hall to pay their respect.”
Services were also held at Trinity Church in Ossett, St Peter’s Church in Horbury the war memorial in Newmillerdam and St James’ Church in Chapelthorpe.
