Yorkshire Water has submitted an application to close Shay Lane, the main link road between Walton and Crofton, while it installs a new sewer.
It is proposing to close the road for six weeks from January 12. But residents and the council have raised concerns about travel disruption to those living in the area.
Neil Rodgers, service director for planning, transportation and highways, said: “We are concerned about the potential disruption to residents caused by closing the road.
“We are in discussions with Yorkshire Water about carrying out the works during school holidays to help minimise the impact.
“The application has not yet been approved but we hope that we can find an alternative solution.”
