Sandal community news

MICHAEL CLAPHAM: The church of St Helen’s was packed on Tuesday for the Funeral Service for this well known Sandal man, who was a sports lover, and a long time member of the Golf Club at Woodthorpe where the flag has been flying at half-mast all week. I last met him at Headingley a few weeks ago, where we talked cricket and not about the state of his health. Michael was educated at Wakefield Grammar School and worked at the Kelvin Contact lens firm, before establishing Wakefield’s first specialist Contact Lens Practice -a partnership with Elizabeth which was very succesful in Wood Street for more than 30 years.

WAKEFIELD BIKEATHON: A cycle ride to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, has been arranged to start at 10.00 am on Sunday October 2. Join the fun at Kettlethorpe High School for a choice between 13 and 26 miles routes along quiet picturesque country lanes. For more information contact Diane Roberts on 254383 or text her at bikeathon@beatbloodcancers.org. Maybe this might be the time for Brian, Peter Welsh, Terry Ryan and I to resurrect those great times of 60 years ago, when every Summer we would tour Europe on two wheels, while with the old St Austins Cyclists.Help with marshalling along the route is needed and volunteers can get in touch with Janet on 259884 .

RONNIE PETERS: A great friend for many years, Chairman of the Kettlethorpe Aged Welfare Club and now Vice-President recently suffered a stroke, but when I visited him in Pinderfields last week he was sitting up and sent his good wishes to all members of the club who are planning a very special November Party for his 95th Birthday.

SUZY FUND: Money for this great charity continues to flow in, with supporters knowing every penny they give is sent out to provide help and Brian tells me he has sent a further £2,000 this week following the £7,000 already despatched to help the starving in Africa. A warm thank you to everyone continuing to give generous support .

SANDAL GARDENING CLUB: The next meeting is on August 17th at WYSSC starting at 7.15pm. Gail Summerfield will talk about The Autumn Garden. Visitors and new members very welcome.

SANDAL RUGBY: A very successful Chairman’s Lunch, hosted by Peter Tunningley last weekend, was attended by 64 members and wives. As we look forward to the new season in September we have a new Secretary, Kevin Daley. There will be two pre-season friendlies, both away, before what looks like being a great challenge for Jim Kilfoyle and his great coaching team in the National League. (and it was good to spot Keith, our touch judge ,hard in training.)

THE SPRING: A warm welcome awaits visitors who call in for a snack and plenty of excellent books, clothes and bric-a-brac for browsers.

TABLE TOP SALE: This event to raise money for ‘Kidz Aware Charity’ will take place at Jubilee Hall Community Centre from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday August 14. The Charity supports parent carers who have children with special needs.
