Scargill's local history

ONE of the most famous faces from the 1980s miners strike, Arthur Scargill, will step back in time with a visit to Sharlston for a television documentary.

In 'Arthur Scargill's Yorkshire', the former National Union of Mineworkers president will show TV presenter Ian Clayton around his home county.

Mr Scargill grew up in Worsborough, near Barnsley, but through his work with the NUM visited pits across the county, including Sharlston Colliery. In 1992 Mr Scargill spoke at a Wakefield Against Pit Closures rally from the balcony of Wakefield Town Hall.

The programme will be shown on ITV at 7.30pm Thursday, January 10.
