Scooter riders bring gifts to kids in hospital

A convoy of scooter riders in fancy dress brought Christmas joy to poorly youngsters in hospital.

They arrived at Pinderfields Hospital with Father Christmas on Saturday after collecting around £3,000 worth of donations of toys and other items.

Featherstone Spartans and the Sharlston based Yorkshire Beerpigs took part in the appeal, which alos hands out toys at Pontefract and Dewsbury hospitals and the transplant centre at Leeds General Infirmary.

And furniture will be donated to create a new family room at the children’s burns unit at Pinderfields as part of the annual appeal by the two clubs.

People were invited to join the riders on their scooter journey on Saturday. They left the Hope and Anchor Inn, on North Baileygate, Pontefract, and headed to Green Lane Working Men’s Club in Featherstone.

There they were joined by Father Christmas on a Toyota-drawn sleigh, before heading to Pinderfields via Weeland Road in Sharlston.

Organiser Sam Garside said: “It went really, really well. We had a brilliant turn out, even with the weather being bad.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Kevin Glassell, who was Santa. It’s a very brave thing he does every year.”

As part of the appeal sofas were donated to the burns unit at Pinderfields to provide a family area where parents can speak to doctors in private.
