Controversial plans to install external seating areas outside a city centre cafe are expected to be approved tomorrow, despite safety fears.
Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) wants to install four tables and 11 seats on the pavements outside its Bru Bar, on the Bullring.
But members of Wakefield Council’s planning and highway committee deferred the application at a meeting earlier this month after voicing fears about the safety of blind, disabled and visually-impaired pedestrians.
Now, council officers have consulted a number of organisations including Wakefield and District Sight Aid and Wakefield Over 50s Action Group.
A report to councillors said the groups had told officers: “The existing arrangement on the Bullring is difficult to negotiate due to the mixture of surfaces, presence of the fountain and existing street furniture.
“The current proposal would exacerbate these problems.”
Despite the concerns, the application is still recommended for approval at a planning meeting.
