A new community health centre could open in Trinity Walk shopping centre next year.

Wakefield Council has approved a planning application on behalf of Spectrum Community Health CIC to turn an empty first floor unit into the health centre.

Spectrum plans to use the site to bring together sexual health services in the district which are currently run from the Margaret Street Clinic and King Street’s Josephine Butler Centre.

During the next few months, it will combine contraception and sexual health teams with the genito-urinary medicine team, outreach sexual health screening teams and the relationship and sexual education team.

It will also work with The Well Women’s Centre, Wakefield Mesmac and The Terrance Higgins Trust.

Dr. Linda Harris, Chief Executive at Spectrum, said: “We have a track record in providing high quality, discreet and confidential services in the district, as well as a successful launch of an integrated sexual health service in the Barnsley District in April this year, and look forward to improving services in Wakefield.”

Agent Michael Townsend, on behalf ofSpectrum said the development would create 18 full-time and 12 part-time jobs. He said it would “allow healthcare provision within a highly accessible city centre location”.
