People are being asked for their memories of the film This Sporting Life as part of a special screening to mark Wakefield Civic Society’s 50th anniversary.

The 1963 movie, based on the novel by the same name by author David Storey, was filmed at various locations across the city including Wakefield Trinity’s Belle Vue ground.

It features a coal miner, played by Richard Harris, who is signed up to play for the local rugby league team.

The Civic Society will hold a screening of the film at Theatre Royal Wakefield on Monday, September 22, and would like to hear from anyone who was involved in the filming.

Kevin Trickett, society president, said: “Last year we showed the film Kes, another classic from the 1960s but set in Barnsley.

“It proved very popular so we thought we would repeat the exercise. Since we announced the screening people have come forward to say that they remember seeing the filming taking place.

“We’d love to hear from anyone else who has a memory of the fiming.”

Anyone who has memories of the film being shot that they would like to share can get in touch with the society by emailing info@wakefieldcivicsociety.org.uk or calling 07967 516841.

The screening, which is also part of the Wakefield Lit Fest, will take place at 7.30pm.
